April 1, 2009 Walnut Acres Begins ... For years we have
been looking for a larger place so we could build the farm business. Lately their have been a lot of exciting changes: - 3 months ago we began working with a mentor to develop the CSA branch of our meat business. -
2 months ago we found a great place near Walnut, IL which is about 30 miles west of here - Last
month we launched the new website. - This week we purchased the Walnut Farm. - Next month
we will be moving the family and livestock to the new farm. - 2 months from now our first meat chickens
will be ready for sale along with beef and pork. And that's just the summary!
It's Official!
For those of you who hadn't yet heard, we officially closed on the Walnut farm on Monday! We are very
excited to be increasing to 10 acres so there will be much more pasture area for the animals and better building to keep everyone
healthy in the winter. The chickens always need good protection from the harsh Illinois winters. Pigs are
very prone to pneumonia, so the new loafing shed will help keep them healthier.
The Old Barn Here you see older barn with farm office attached which stands at the entrance
as a testimony to the history of this beautiful property. The sows will each have a spot in this barn to
have their babies. Attached to the barn is the bulk house where the previous owner stored the milk from the dairy.
On the far left is the office. Now we will be able to care for customers that come out to the farm without everyone
coming through the house. This is my view from the kitchen window - a pretty sight!
